Opening Ceremonies Hits and Misses

Hits
The Queen and James Bond
The smokestacks
The cauldron
The LED screens on the seats
Mr. Bean
The Czech Republic's team uniforms
The cover of "Come Together"
The fireworks

Misses
Where was Milne? Where was Lewis? Salute to great British children's lit, my heinie.
The scary big baby.
What about the other 800 years of history?
Too much snogging.
The total cop-out of the final torch lighting. "Ummm... we can't pick one former athlete we want to honor, so we'll just let all these guys do it instead."
Maybe this is a miss on my part but why Muhammed Ali? He made perfect sense for Atlanta. Not so much for here.
A total lack of Tolkien, Monty Python, and Dr. Who.

So, what did you think about it?

  1. I'm SO with you on pretty much everything - and loved that you pointed out the Czech Republic's outfits! What about Sir Elton John? He could have bookended with Sir Paul. And I just kept hoping the Jeremy, Richard, & James would come zooming around in some fantastic automobile...and the least they could do was stick the Tardis in the background or something... :D Lisa

    1. You are right -- totally forgot about Sir Elton. Apparently they did too. :-( Also serious lack of Bond MUSIC. Supposedly there was a nod to the Tardis in audio at the end of Bohemian Rhapsody, but I missed it. And what about those great British autos? Maybe those "doves" should have been riding Triumphs instead of bicycles. Did love the JK Rowling part.

  2. I have never bothered to watch the opening ceremonies for the Olympics. I sat down thinking that it would be some kind of dignified thing. I didn't realize it was a Superbowl Half-time show, Las Vegas style. Ick. The world, the whole world has gone so tacky. I am so tired of groups of people dressed in weird or scanty outfits gyrating and fist pumping on a big stage. Spare me. I guess I didn't watch long enough to see anything redeeming. We skipped ahead to the different athletes from the different countries marching in. I liked that! Unfortunately, I fell asleep right around the D's. LOL.

    1. Oh, you really didn't like it! ;-) You know I didn't find the outfits bad or the dancing really. The show was pretty par for the course for an opening ceremonies. My complaint about the snogging was that it really wasn't necessary. If they were supposed to be "falling in love" after texting they could have illustrated that with a slow dance or some hand-holding. Not sure why they had to make out within seconds of meeting each other.

  3. Ok, Bean and Bond were awesome, but I'm totally with you about Tolkien, Monty Python, and Dr. Who. I knew I liked you for a reason :-)

    1. Yes, apparently only the Independent Olympic Athletes got the memo from the Ministry of Silly Walks. So sad.

  4. Totally with you on the snogging issue, the Queen and Bond and good old Mr Bean but as for the rest... it was great! Mind you I'm biased as I live in the UK!!

I guess it's the old adage... you can't please everybody, *smile*

    1. Oh San, I hope I didn't offend. I LOVE your country. In fact I am beginning to think so much got lost "in translation." Most Brits I have heard from loved it. Most Americans are like, "But where was ______?" There is so much we love about what you guys do, but I think what WE really love is different from what is really loved there. I think it reached out and touched the British audience, but left the world scratching its head a little bit.
